Randy was a three sport athlete at Cherokee Vocational High School. He lettered in basketball, baseball, and football for the Indians. After high school he received a football scholarship to Northeast Mississippi Community College, playing for the Tigers during the 1979-80 and the 1980-81 season. During his freshman season he was chosen the team's best offensive back and was in the top twenty rushing the football in the final NJCAA statistics his sophomore year. He was selected to the All-State team both years while at Northeast. He continued his football career at Delta State University during his junior and senior seasons where he started at running back averaging 4.6 yards per carry and was elected permanent team captain his senior year. His final year of football was in 1985 when he was signed as a free agent by the Orlando Renagades of USFL. He coached football at Tishomingo County High School in Mississippi for three years and one year at Northeast Mississippi Junior College.
