Lori graduated from Deshler High School in 1986, where she excelled in both the classroom and on the playing field. While being a gifted athlete she also was a National Science Merit Award Winner and was an Academic All-American.

As a high school athlete she won four state championships as a runner and one other as a member of the Tigers basketball squad. In Cross Country, Lori was All-State in 1983, 1984, and 1985. In track, she was on the All-State Team in 1986. In basketball she was selected to the All-County Team in 1986.

After high school she was signed to a full scholarship to U.A.B. in track and cross country. While there, she was a team captain in 1989 and 1990.

Lori represented the United State on the international Student Exchange Team in London, England and finished third for the United States in the 10K race.
