Coach Gerelds served as head football coach and athletic director at Deshler High School from 1984-1994. Under his leadership, Deshler participated in the playoff's on a regular basis, winning the state football title in class 4-A in 1990 with a 15-0 record. He retired from Deshler with a record of 101-34.

During his coaching career he served as head coach at Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, Shoals Christian in Florence, Belmont High School in Tishomingo County, Mississippi in addition to his years with the Tigers.

The success that Tandy Gerelds had on the football field is known by all sports fans in the Shoals in that he helped revive the schools athletic program to the level it maintains today. While his success on the football field was evident, it was his success as a leader of young people that many consider his greatest  accomplishment.
